PHP Developer Circa £26,000 Canterbury

About you

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years’ experience developing PHP/MySQL based websites and/or web applications at a commercial level OR educated to at least degree level in an appropriate discipline (Computer Science/Web Computing etc)

You must be commercially minded in your approach to development, focussing on providing top level digital solutions within the time constraints of pre-defined budgets.

Flexible working is encouraged in our company. We use industry leading software to delegate tasks and expect you to religiously record your activities and time spent to assist in the productivity of your team. Weekly development sprints will be something you manage yourself. We expect you to get the job done - in or out of the office - and trust in you to deliver your very best with the freedom provided.

As part of a small collaborative team (currently made up of 3 developers and the Digital Production Director) you will be responsible for rapid development and testing of functionality across a variety of projects, taking ownership of individual elements along the way. Self-motivation is a must, logical thinking essential. You must be capable of taking a development concept from start to finish ensuring accuracy and high standards of coding throughout.

Day to Day

We develop and support a variety of diverse web applications and websites which are predominantly created and run on our own home grown PHP framework using a MySQL database. Whilst all core application code is written in PHP, we are keen to leverage the power of industry leading frameworks and libraries where required. User interfaces are built through hand coded Javascript and libraries such as JQuery and Bootstrap. Version control using Git is absolutely essential for all code.

Our projects range from simple Brochure sites through to e-commerce systems and a handful of complex web applications. You must be as happy taking a template from our front end developer and integrating it into our CMS as developing bespoke functionality and integrating third party applications. Likewise you should be comfortable writing custom extensions for Magento or Wordpress.

We also support a range of legacy PHP projects so you will be expected to meet the technical debugging challenges with enthusiasm when required.

To assist in the development of our PHP framework and CMS, Fridays are internal development days where you will collaborate with your colleagues to enhance the system in ways which will benefit the long term goals of the business and moreover boost efficiency in future projects.

Key requirements

  • Educated to degree level in Computer Science or similar discipline
  • Minimum of 3+ years experience in PHP and MVC frameworks
  • Must know enough about GIT to know when a rebase is called for
  • Knowledge of MySQL and Apache (Nginx would be an advantage)
  • Strong javascript abilities (enough to debug jQuery)
  • Excellent attention to detail and neatness in coding
